BACKSTORY:
No one doubts the creativity of children. Highly creative and inventive, as soon as they are left to play they will create their own space and toys. That said an infant bed/cot/crib/cradle is probably one of the oldest piece of furniture purpose-built with the sole intent for use by infants and young children. Playhouses/Cubby Houses/Wendy houses and other kid’s furniture saw a rise in popularity in the west as people became more affluent, with the first Wendy House in 1904 for the first production of the play “Peter Pan”. Having miniature versions of what adults had was and is a way for children to play and express themselves by imitating of adult behaviour. Our chair and stool is no exception.

The pattern featured in the fabric used here is singularly linked to the toghu/atoghu style of Cameroon. The Toghu or Atoghu fabric is one of the most popular, most distinguished and easily recognisable in Cameroon. It is much beloved across the tribal divides. Traditionally hand woven by the people of the northwest and west regions, the raised effect of the colourful embroidery gives the texture a beautiful 3-dimensional aspect and rich regal feel. Originally all cotton, the primary colours are red, green, yellow and white on a black background. The advent of modernism means synthetic printed versions have often replaced the more traditional, artisanal and striking handicraft work made of 100% cotton. While synthetics have the luxury of being more resilient (stretching, waterproof and stain resistant), longer lasting, and having less of a tendency to wrinkle and hence being more versatile in use, natural cotton fibres make for more eco-friendly, more skin friendly, breathable, and so more long-wear comfortable. Industrially produced fabrics also tend to play around more with other colours and the motifs have become more regular and have lost the “handmade” dissimilarity one gets from the human effort. Furthermore, the toghu traditional outfits made of cotton are considered more valuable – the older they get, the more valuable they are. There is of course a limit to just how old these can be as we are talking about fabrics, tools and techniques that can only date as far back as foreign/colonial influence.

Atoghu or Toghu patterns are worn, by both women and men of the northwest and west regions, often and proudly and in every Toghu fabric and design style possible.

Nowadays the patterns and designs are incorporated in industrially produced fabrics (as is the case here) and are being extended to decorative objects and accessories.
