BACK STORY

Patchwork and quilting are often mentioned in the same breath, as they are often combined in the same project, but they are two very distinctive techniques. Patchwork is the art of sewing together pieces of fabric to form a pattern or block. Quilting is the process of sewing two or more layers of fabric together to make a thicker padded piece, which is then usually used to create a quilt or quilted garment. Quilting is typically done with three layers: the top fabric, followed by batting or insulating material and then backing material.

A patchwork quilt is a quilt in which the top layer consists of pieces of fabric sewn together to form a design. Back in the day, this was done to make full use of leftover scraps of fabric. Nowadays fabrics are often bought specially for specific designs and often fabrics are sold in quarter metres (or quarter yards for the USA), ready for use.
