This hollow traditional armband is made of bronze with a typical oxidized green colour tempered with a powdery white dust-like aspect.
This substantial ornate bracelet was a form of currency as well as an object of prestige and decoration among the Bamum (Bamun) people of Cameroon up until probably the late 1940s. It typically features a complex series of patterns, decorated with concentric circles at both edges separated by a series of dots, lines, zig-zag patterns and a center section arranged as a complex interlace design. This particular one has two sets of grooves along the outside surface. This massive, heavy and hollow copper alloy cast bracelet is an extraordinary example of the skill of the Bamun past and present.
